MANCHESTER AIRPORT IS ON THE HUNT FOR AN ARCHITECT TO MASTERMIND ITS £1 BILLION EXPANSION PROGRAMME. ANNOUNCED LAST WEEK, THE AMBITIOUS PROJECT WILL DOUBLE CAPACITY AT THE UK’S THIRD LARGEST AIRPORT WHICH SERVED 22 MILLION PASSENGERS IN 2014. SUPPLIERS WILL BE REQUIRED SOON AFTER FROM VARIOUS FIELDS OF WORK INCLUDING AEROSPACE, FABRICATION, ROOFING AND BEYOND.
Planned to complete in 2026, the expansion will deliver ‘light, bright, modern facilities with the ability to accommodate future growth’. Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 will both be upgraded with the former being reconfigured to become the airport’s new flagship building. A new US immigration pre-clearance facility, self-service check-in areas and approximately 50 food, beverage and retail outlets will also be delivered. Further improvements will include three new piers with air bridges, new stands, multi-storey and surface car parks and taxiway developments.
The winning team will develop the scheme from RIBA Stage 2 to 6. A multidisciplinary engineer and integrated design team are also sought in separate lots. AHR, Pascall + Watson Architecture and Pick Everard were all recruited to a framework with the airport earlier this year.
Meanwhile nearby, developer Argent is working with Bennetts Associates, Cartwright Pickard, AEW and FaulknerBrowns on the 465,000m² ‘Airport City’ mixed-use development masterplanned by 5Plus Architects.
