ARCHITECT WANTED FOR IPSWICH TOWER BLOCK REVAMP07 July 2015
IPSWICH SEEKS ARCHITECT FOR TOWER BLOCK REVAMP
Ipswich Borough Council is on the hunt for an architect to overhaul Cumberland Towers
Completed in 1966, the Ipswich Borough Architects Department-designed building on Bramford Road features 67 sheltered accommodation units for older people with support needs.
Cumberland Towers was originally council housing but the building was converted into sheltered housing for the elderly during the 1980s.
It was planned as the first of a 12-strong cluster of high-rise buildings between London Road and Norwich Road which was later abandoned.
The project will re-clad the 12-storey structure; replace doors and windows; and extend the building’s life span by a further 60 years.
The winning team will develop plans to RIBA Stage 4.
The deadline for the receipt of tenders is 12noon on 20 July.
