ARCHITECT WANTED BY THE ROYAL ACADEMY OF ARTS

IDEAS ARE BEING SORT AFTER FOR LONDON'S BROWNFIELD SITES BY THE ROYAL ACAEMDY OF ARTS

Architects are being invited to come up with a site and propsose an out of the box use for it that will help complete 'London's urban Jigsaw'

The Chancellor made the announcement in February that government has created Greater London Authroity’s Land Commission with the mandate of locating public sector brownfield land and ensuring ‘that all sites are developed by 2025, to help the capital meet its target of over 400,000 new homes by 2025’.

The use of brownfield publicly owned is seen as the best way the UK government can ease the housing crisis in the capital.

Architects for this competition are urged to approach the project in a research heavy way, focusing on demographics, economy and the urban fabric of surrounding areas

The brief contained in the document below claims the solution could be a ‘larger-scale intervention or light-touch tweaks'

It continued: ‘We are looking for thoughtful and original ideas that should be grounded in reality but need not be constrained by budget or feasibility, instead, showing what could be achieved by innovative ideas and approaches.’

Owen Hopkins, RA architecture programme curator said: ‘London is at a cross-roads. How can its population continue to increase without at the same time destroying what makes it such a successful city – economically and culturally? This project is intended to act as a contribution to the debate about London’s future, positing how the strategic use of redundant brownfield sites can mitigate some of the downsides of London’s success.’

The Royal academy of arts will select 4 teams to present their solutions in front of a made panel of experts at a series of open crits.

Every team will receive an honorarium of £1,000 & the 4 worked up proposals will be exhibited in the RA’s architecture space in May 2016.
